Hola amigos!
Wow! What a couple of days we have had. We arrived in Bayonne, France on Friday night only to find out that all the hostels were booked. We splurged and got a hotel for 100 Euros instead. (Not like we were bothered at all) Saturday morning we walked into town, had gelato for breakfast (it really is an awesome breakfast!) and took the train into St. Jean Pied du Port for the start of our journey on Sunday. We bought some fresh fruit, veg and cheese from this cute little market and settled into our hostel for the night. We were in a room with 4 others and mid afternoon it started pouring...we all turned in early for the night but it wasn´t the wisest decision because most of us were up all night, Stephen and myself included. Stephen awoke to find his knee throbbing and the rain was still coming down. After a tasty pilgrim´s breakfast of bread, butter and jams, we sucked it up, put on our rain gear and went out onto the path. Today was the hardest day, (so they tell us), a very steep climb followed by a lot of downhill shock absorption to arrive at our destination for tonight, Roncesvalles, Spain, just beyond the Pyranees mountain range at the border of France and Spain. We decided to splurge on a private room to nurse our aching bodies back to health. We both have packs that weigh about 20-25 lbs- man my shoulders are sore! We are going to take many hot baths tonight. Just had dinner- we split a cheese sandwich and I just treated myself to a hot chocolate. Stephen and I have decided we are going to do our best to eat like pilgrims too so no fancy meals any time soon...until Italy of course!
Well that´s my time. Unfortunately I can´t add any photos at this internet station, so it may be awhile before I can show you what we´ve been up to.
Love,
Andrea
