Easy breezy into Athens

Greece From Greece More from Greece on August 9, 2009

Athens, 9am

Just wanted to let you all know that Stephen and I arrived safe and sound in Athens last night.  It's so funny the difference between cultures- at London "Stand-Still" airport, they basically have the armed guard waiting for you...in Athens, they have 2 lanes, "goods to declare" and "nothing to declare" with absolutely no one working them.  There is basically no customs here!  We didn't even get stamped in or anything... The Greeks are cool, I can tell already! :)

And they drive fast- we got in and our cabbie told us to buckle up right away...thought it was a little odd as I have never had a cabbie ask me to do that before.  I understood why as I watched the spedometer climb to 150 k!  (I thought the autoban was in Germany?!)  We got a hotel last night to make life a bit easier at that hour and we're off to a hostel today where we will begin to make plans for the next couple of weeks.  We'll probably stick around here for a few days and see the sights before heading off to the islands.

We are so happy to be here experiencing a new culture.    The Greek alphabet and writing is pretty crazy...I keep forgetting I'm not in Italy anymore.  I keep kicking myself every time I say "Grazie".  I need a crash-course in Greek- fast!

I'll see if I can add some pictures today.  We do have an internet connection in our hotel for a couple more hours...stay tuned!  Talk to you soon...

Allo Andre'a et Ste'phan: En francais, I use the apostrophy for the absent e'gue , the "EH" sound effect. And by the way, I can'T spell in any language. SOOOO happy to hear you've gotten past the bloomin poor behaviour from those Ducks!, as some English would say.I was also somewhat miffed at the Airline bookies for not allerting you of that sort of thing at their other ends. En tous cas. OH YES, the lands of Zeus, one of the many many adoring jealous Gods. Ani't theys all the same. I'm so sure U will love your X's in Greco. Avec tendrese, AA.

Oh yeah - be very careful on streets and even sidewalks and pedestrian walkways....people drive WAY crazy there - cars, bikes, scooters....just always assume to look around before you walk anywhere, okay? You will definitely notice all the roadside memorials....BE SAFE!

EFF-FAIR-EEE-STOW! is how you say thank you! TEA - KHAN-EEZ is how are you?

Dude, I think we had the same customs person - that is if you landed in Stanstead - it kind of sounds like her! Preying on happy, good-looking people who are having a great time travelling the world - as opposed to her miserable life stamping passports!

You will love the Islands....the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen was in Oia - that's in Santorini. I was also in Paros and Mykonos - but I hear Rhodes and Crete are also very beautiful. If you are looking for nightlife - Mykonos was super fun. On Paros I went to this really cool outdoor terrace restaurant - you walked in and then you were outside. The owner was friends with a guy who owned 'the palace' on Pape - went there for my 30th. Also on Paros you can go to these caves - I wasn't super impressed - kind of just damp and smelly! But definitely hit Santorini - the ferry is a long ride, but you can tan outside - the water is the most beautiful blue - you will know it when you see it - and please think of me!

Opa! Yammmas! xo Lisa

Great to hear from you guys and to know that you arrived in Greece without any distressing events. Have fun, there is certainly a lot of history there. Some of my fondest readings were of Hercules and all that Greek mythology. We had to study it in school. So move on into another adventure and enjoy the Islands and culture! Lots of love!
